Item name: Hogwarts
Category: Places
Hogwarts Castle is the home of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

This is of course, where Harry spends most of the year, and where most of the events depicted in the books occur.

The exact location is not known, but it is suspected to be located within the British mainland as no major expanse of water is crossed to get there. Current speculation leads many to believe that it is in fact located somewhere in Scotland.

No floorplan exists, and it it is impossible to create an accurate plan as stairways and some rooms are always on the move. There are also secret rooms that are long forgotten.

Again, the exact layout of the grounds are not known, but we do know of the lake, the whomping willow (and its secret tunnel), Hagrid's hut, the Quidditch pitch and the Forbidden Forest.
Origins of:
A "Hogwart" is a type of Lily, a plant/flower grown from a bulb - ?Hogwarts? is a kind of flower. Rowling explained the origins in an SMH interview: ?Ideas come from all sorts of places and sometimes I don't realise where I got them from. A friend from London recently asked me if I remembered when we first saw Hogwarts. I had no idea what she was talking about until she recalled the day we went to Kew Gardens and saw those lilies that were called Hogwarts. I'd seen them seven years before and they'd bubbled around in my memory. When Hogwarts occurred to me as a name for the school, I had no idea where it came from.?

First appeared in book 1.

The Hogwarts school motto is "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus", which is Latin for "Never tickle a sleeping dragon".

The location of Hogwarts as being in Scotland was confirmed in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The entry for Acromantula mentions a rumoured colony in Scotland, but with "confirmed" scrawled in by "Harry"...
